GPT/ALT (EC 2.6.1.2) is widely present in animals, plants, microorganisms and cultured cells. It catalyzes the transamination reaction of amino acids and keto acids, and plays an important role in amino acid metabolism. In addition, the GPT/ALT activity of mammalian liver cells is very high. When the liver cells are necrotic, GPT/ALT is released into the blood, and the serum GPT activity is significantly increased.
