The process of "humanization" is usually applied to monoclonal antibodies developed for administration to humans. Humanized antibodies are antibodies from non-human species whose protein sequences have been modified to increase their similarity to the antibody variants produced naturally in humans.

Humanized antibodies have advantages over the mouse monoclonals; the immunogenicity of the mAb is reduced (since much of the immune response occurs against the mouse Ig constant region); the human C region allows for human effect or functions to take place; and the serum half-life of the mAb in humans is significantly increased.
