It catalyzes the hydrolysis of alpha-glycosidic bonds between aryl or hydrocarbon groups and sugar groups to produce glucose, not only with cell wall relaxation or Reinforcement is related to cell recognition and the production of some signal molecules.

alpha-GC decomposes p-nitrobenzene-alpha-D glucopyranoside to generate p-nitrophenol, which has a maximum absorption peak at 400nm. The alpha-GC activity is calculated by measuring the rate of increase in absorbance.
